Where are they now?

Before and After results for Design Your Life on Purpose (DYLOP)

Sometimes I find it hard to believe that I have been running this program for several years now.

One of the things I ask my lovely pathfinders (collective noun for people who have designed their life) to do is complete a survey at the beginning and then again at the 3-month check in.  The survey is completed for a number of reasons:

  1. I am uber curious about where they are coming from and how they are feeling 3 months in

  2. I want to ensure that they have had value out of the program and a tangible “shift” in where they were to where they are now

  3. It is hard to see what you were like when you have changed. Sometimes all you can see is the long road of change ahead of you, rather than how far you have come already

  4. It gives me insights into what might be next either for the program to add more value or subsequent follow up activity,

You will see from the results that changes have been made across the board.

Some interesting ones to point out are…..

Overall satisfaction with life and feeling you can bring your best everyday have increased.  I find once people start deciding what and how they want their life to go, means they feel more positive about it overall.

Life allowing you to focus on the areas you want

With such uncertainty over the last 2 years with the Covid 19 pandemic it can really affect the way people feel in relation to “life allows you to focus on the areas you want”.  Determining what you can pursue in your Strategic Life Map when life gives you lemons, takes a little while to get in the groove.

Know and Understand your Purpose & your Life Path

This has contracted and I find this happens once we start exploring the strategic life map.  We realise that maybe what we were focusing on, was not exactly the thing we thought and it starts us questioning our purpose on this planet.  All normal stuff to go through, and continue to, as life evolves so will you.  The last question can also make you realise that the path ahead might not be as crystal clear as you thought coming in.

Areas of desired change

When people turn up to a DYLOP program they are often focused on changing career or where they spend their time (lifestyle).  Sometimes this is triggered by a change in their health and fitness.  The drive is generally looking at different ways to have a career and lifestyle.  Lifestyle is very much linked to career, as it often helps us afford the lifestyle we are after.

Relationships going up post the course is one that interests me.  It could be that when you change, people around you may not understand why you are changing or they are not on the same journey, or at the same speed, this can strain relationships.  In any long-term relationship (romantic or otherwise), people will improve and change at different paces.

My recommendation is to surround yourself with people who will lift you up and support your strategic life map.  However, choose carefully.  People can dismiss your dreams because they are not pursuing theirs or they don't get excited by your dream.  They might think they are helping you, when in fact they may not be.  Just remember this is your strategic life map and they can have their own, no problems at all.

Expectations

The before question asks then what people expected to get from DYLOP.  The after is more about what they need now and/or what they got at the end of the 3 months.

I would expect (as is shown) that actions would be the next area of focus. Once you have a plan and focus you want to drive into action.  Clarity remains high because each step that people take forward, opens up more options, which requires more need for clarity.

In the post 3 months coaching session, we talk a lot about the analogy or walking into a space that has lighting triggered by movement.  Once you take the first step forward, some lights come on, showing your options.  Take more steps forward and more lights come on showing even more options.

The secret is in that first step

The first step might not be precisely the perfect step, but it will reveal a path you would not have seen beforehand.  As an example, Steve Jobs would not have predicted that fonts would be a differentiator for Mac’s, when he decided to study calligraphy at university.  I did not predict that designing t-shirts for a side hustle Yellow & Co, would have enabled me to design my own merchandise for Incahoots.
